Cool Notepad Trick

I came across this the other day, and I must admit I hadn’t seen it before (and I am guessing not many others have either).

How to create a log file using Notepad.

  1. Open a new notepad file.
  2. On the first line enter the text .LOG (in capitals) and press enter to take the cursor to the next line.
  3. Then save the file, and close it.
  4. Next time you open the file, notepad will have entered the time and date on a new line and placed the cursor below it.
  5. Each time you add notes and close the document notepad will repeat the process, logging each new set of notes.

It should look something like this;

.LOG
11:13 AM 23/04/2012
Hello there
11:23 AM 23/04/2012
Next note
11:43 AM 23/04/2012

This looks like it has been around for some time but is not widely known (or used). Here is a link to the Microsoft knowledge base article KB260563 that explains it.
